The Eyes of a Labrador Retriever

It is a daily struggle at our house when it comes to who is going to work with mom. Most days, if we are being honest with one another, it depends on my patience level. Some days, it depends on my work load. Other days, its decided by the dogs. Who needs attention the most? Who can I train best on my breaks? What are my errands like for that day?

Gus is a Labrador Retriever. Big emphasis on the word "retriever"! Literally, if it fits in his mouth, he will retrieve it. With or without a command. It is usually the first thing in sight as soon as he is sprung from "doggie jail". Gus is extremely smart but he also comes full of high powered energy. The Energizer Bunny has nothing on him. His sire is an imported British Lab with extreme drive and the apple did not fall far from the tree.

Gus turned a year old in March. He spent the first eight months of his life with an elderly couple as their family companion. His energy become too much for them to handle on a daily basis and he was starting to be destructive out of boredom. The breeder contacted me to see if I would be interested in meeting him because I had inquired about his litter when they were born. I also had a litter of Aussies at the time and I decided that it was in my best interest not to bring in an outside puppy for bio-security purposes. As you can tell, it was love at first sight and he went home with us. He still needs some work in the manners department but he loves to please and learns quickly. My goal for Gus is to be titled in field trials or hunt tests. I have always hunted over my labs but I have never competed with them. This will be a new journey for both of us to learn as a team.

These eyes have pierced my soul. Could you honestly deny this sweet face? As you can tell, Gus was the winner as today's toe warmer. He also has a toy in his mouth for the 30 minute commute to the office. Gotta love a Lab!
